Women’s Golf Team is Tightly Linked

Updated: Nov 22

Nobody knows more about hard work and dedication than the women’s golf team at Jordan. This season, the golf team has gained several new members, and while none of them are undefeated like last season, all of the girls on the team are putting in a lot of effort to improve. Their coach, Tim Mahon, shared that he is “super proud of the effort these new players are displaying,” and added that “it’s going to take a season but eventually they will be very good and extremely competitive.” For Coach Mahon, leading the team is more about cultivating the skills his players will need both in and outside of the game, making sure they enjoy the game, since, in his words, “golf is a game for life.”

One hope that the team has is for more students to come out to watch the matches, even though they are all away from Jordan. Fredi Lehrich, a sophomore on the team, explained that “we practice at Hillandale and then matches are everywhere depending on where different schools practice.”

Many of the girls really enjoy being a part of it and find it to be a unique experience, especially with there being only seven players. Lehrich feels that “it’s a lot of fun because some of them are people that I would not typically talk to just because we’re in different grades and everything, so it’s fun to be able to be close with everyone on the team.”

This special, close-knit experience is what drew many of the players to join the team in the first place. Zoe Dolbow, another sophomore on the team, shared that she was inspired to play golf because “four seniors had left, and Fredi was looking for people to recruit for the team. It seemed like a fun experience and it has great opportunities.” Its small size doesn’t just make the golf team a more bonded, special community to be a part of; it also allows their coach to give more feedback and instruction. Coach Mahon emphasized that “it’s difficult to give enough attention to each player with golf if you have more than six to eight players, so seven on the team is ideal.” For him, being able to watch the girls grow is the main appeal of coaching. According to Mahon, he got asked to start the program six years ago and it’s “something [he] fell into”, but that he finds a lot of enjoyment from doing. The personalities and qualities of the student athletes that he’s met at Jordan are what makes Mahon enjoy this job as much as he does, and it’s also what makes the team’s community so great.

In Lehrich’s words, “it’s not cliquey, and everyone is able to talk to each other because it’s small and it’s a lot tighter.” The girls hope to get more support on platforms like social media, and want to, as Lehrich highlighted, “spread awareness that there is a golf team here and that it is a really fun team to be on.”weekend
