Winter Guard Returns After 22 Years

After more than two decades without a program, the JHS Winter Guard made its return this season, performing at a West Johnston High School competition on February 28.

“I'm happy that Jordan has decided to bring back winter guard after so long. It gives us an opportunity to leave a lasting impression,” said junior Chloe Williams, the team's captain.

Winter guard is an indoor performance activity that combines dance, music, and equipment such as flags, rifles, and sabers. Winter Guard International describes it as a mix of athletic skill and artistic performance, often called the “sport of the arts.” With the help of coaches Evvie Rumsey, Keohn Peacock and band director Mr. Garris, the team of seven practiced for weeks to prepare their routine, learning choreography and perfecting their timing.

“I've been pushing for it since last indoor season,” said Rumsey. “Aside from the lack of numbers, the guard didn't have a full time instructor to commit to the schedule and outside time it takes to get a show together. It was a goal of mine, and when I inquired I was told to go for it.” This season marks a major comeback for the program, which had not existed at the school since 2004.

“It feels exhilarating. I feel great that the students and coaches made that happen,” said Mr. Garris.

The squad participated in three performances over the winter months. A free friends and family show, Brick by Brick, will be held March 28 in the Jordan gym. Team members hope to recruit more students for next season.
