Students Gain Voice In Friday Night Lights Themes

Leading up to the eventually canceled football against Riverside, there was major excitement towards which game theme students would decide to follow. The theme “Steal the Moon” was listed before the season with the rest of the themes. After an impromptu Instagram vote, “Black Out” was announced to replace “Steal the Moon.”

Some students were glad to see the change, thinking the new theme would be easier to pull off, while some were disappointed that the theme wasn’t as creative as “Steal the Moon.”

Seeing the school come together to make this decision raised the question of how Jordan’s student body and Student Government (SGA) make decisions on themes for all types of events.

To find out, I talked to Navya Mehrotra, a senior and the student body president. She explained that Principal Taylor suggested a theme change after hearing differing opinions from students. “We decided that the best way to determine whether to change the theme was a vote on Instagram,” said Mehrotra. Usually, SGA would post on Canvas as well to reach the wider student body, but was unable to due to lack of time.

Typically, SGA leaders choose football themes, which get sent to the football coaches and Ms. Taylor for feedback and approval before the start of the fall semester. All involved pitch in ideas and vote based on what may satisfy the most students. The same goes for Spirit Week themes, with more input from all SGA members.
