Many students would agree that one of the most important parts of high school is finding a community that supports and welcomes you. One way to do that is by being a part of a performing art.
Chorus is a great example of this. The chorus teacher, Ms. Vestal, encourages students who want to be a part of “a fun community that sings” or “love singing but aren’t super confident” to join chorus.
“Singing is just like any other subject. Maybe you don’t know how to ‘sing’ just like you don’t know math equations; it has to be taught to you,” she adds, emphasizing the fact that no prior knowledge is needed to join the class.
If you are interested in joining chorus, Ms. Vestal encourages you to come talk to her in 128.
“I’ve grown more confident throughout this semester and learned to be more comfortable with who I am. It is really a no judgment zone and just a super fun place to try something new!” one student said when asked about why others should join chorus.
Many others in the class voiced their opinions about chorus, the community it builds and the skills it teaches you, one saying that she’s “never had a chorus teacher as warm and supportive as Ms. Vestal” and that the class is a wonderful way to improve singing in “a non stressful scenario.”
Vestal expressed wanting to expose her students to music that they might not otherwise choose to listen to. “I want the songs to be different and not sound all the same, [and for them] to come from a variety of backgrounds and languages.”
Chorus students expressed their hopes for the future of the chorus program, one saying that a song from a musical would be fun, “especially one with a strong ensemble.” Others expressed their love for songs with fun vocal harmonies that are also “really powerful and beautiful to listen to.”
When asked how others can support the chorus community, Vestal said to “come to our shows… By coming to our concerts you are not only supporting the program but the individual students as they share their voices and show the progress they have made.”
All information about upcoming events are on the chorus instagram (@jordanchorus).
