At the closing performance of the musical Big Fish, Jordan High School’s theatre director Olivia Bellido announced that Jordan Theatre will be producing Water for Elephants in the fall of 2025. Water for Elephants is written by Rick Elice with music and lyrics by PigPen Theatre Company. It is adapted from the book of the same name written by Sara Gruen. Jordan will be working with groups from Broadway Licensing and PigPen Theatre Company to pilot the high school edition of Water for Elephants, becoming the first-ever school to perform the show.
When asked for comment, director Olivia Bellido exclaimed that she’s “overwhelmed and honored” about this opportunity. About the production itself, she said, “I’m excited to work with puppets! I love doing things that aren’t flashy; I love telling beautiful stories. This is a beautiful story.” Theatre student Eden Santo-Kilgore, who auditioned for the role of Walter, said before auditions, “I’m feeling mostly excited, kind of jittery.” They added, “We’re each doing songs and scenes as well as a dance combo we’ve learned on our own time.” Auditions were held last week, with the cast list coming out Monday, April 28th.
All in all, Jordan Theatre is sure to create a wonderful experience with Water for Elephants, so keep an eye out for further details about the show!
