The start of the school year comes with new and returning clubs. One of the largest and most active clubs at Jordan, Student Government, has already kicked off the year!
Student Government Association (SGA) is a student-run organization that serves as a bridge between students and administration.
They help the administration plan events, with the intent of benefiting the whole school.
SGA is at the center of the Jordan experience, many of the big and exciting events here at Jordan can be tied back to them.
This year, one of SGA’s main focuses is Homecoming, “especially now that we don't have as much support planning the pep rally,” says senior Navya Mehrotra, the SGA president. Ms. Bell, the former assistant athletic director at Jordan, usually assisted in planning pep rallies, but now that she is no longer at the school, much of that responsibility has fallen into the hands of SGA, and their new teacher advisors.
The club also plans to expand some of the events they organize, including more pep rallies to recognize sports from all seasons.
This year's SGA leadership includes Navya Mehrotra, the student body president; Pat Adams, the student body vice president; Lourdes Manson, the student body secretary; and Maya Manikumar, the student body press secretary; as well as two representatives each for seniors, juniors, and sophomores. These elected leaders are vital to the organization of the club, but the foundation of the club starts with the student body.
SGA meets in the Media Center at 8:45 every other Tuesday. A typical SGA meeting starts off with a brief agenda and then students break off to do specific committee work. Navya explained that students can get involved by coming to full SGA meetings. They are open, and welcoming to any students who want to come and participate.
When asked about her goals for the year, Navya responded, “to have everyone actively involved to be able to promote student engagement.”
For students who are passionate about all the fun at Jordan, becoming involved in SGA is a great way to make an impact.
This year, SGA is working to partner with Jordan’s National Honor Society (NHS) to have students register to volunteer with SGA through Canvas. One of the major volunteer opportunities available is to help set up and clean up school dances. If SGA and NHS are able to collaborate, the volunteer hours students sign up for could be put towards required NHS volunteer hours.
In addition to joining the club and volunteering, Student Government is always looking for feedback, and new ideas, especially so they can be receptive to what the student body wants and needs. Students can provide their own feedback by replying to polls and questionnaires that SGA publishes.weekend
