“Elusive Mascot” Suit Reappears After Six Months, Just In Time For Pep Rally

After a frantic search that began more than a month ago, the Falcon mascot is back following fruitless probes through forgotten closets throughout the building. Missing since last fall, the elusive suit was discovered in a garage of a former student, who wore the outfit at Falcon Fest.

“I knew it was in someone’s garage!” exclaimed Assistant Principal Ms. Huckbody after learning it had been found.

Coach King, the athletic director, said. “Y’all did some good work. This thing has been gone for a while.”

The hunt for the outfit started more than a month ago when the Falcon Post inquired about using the suit to create Instagram reels. The first emails went to Coach King, who responded by saying he didn’t know where the Falcon was. In March, the assistant principals got involved by opening unopened doors.

“I checked the basketball closet. I checked the cheer closet. I checked all of the locker rooms and I couldn’t find it,” Ms. Huckbody said.

Booster Club President Carrie Williamson joined the search last week, rummaging through the “Githens Closet.” A reused relic of the past, the Githens Closet sits at the end of the Spanish hall, inside the room entitled “Women’s Locker Room.” The unofficial closet name dates back to when Githens Middle and Jordan High occupied the same building from 1966-1988. Cabinets in the room and boxes in them were opened. No mascot.

“I thought the story was going to end (that we’d find the suit) here in the locker rooms,” Assistant Principal Ms. Nelson said after looking through the Githens Closet, currently used by the cheer and golf teams. “It’s the elusive mascot,” Ms. Nelson added as she described how this ordeal has happened before. “It has been a huge mystery, and this is not the first time,” she says. The Falcon costume was lost and found previously on multiple occasions.

Less than 24 hours before the spring pep rally, the suit was returned to JHS. The familiar feathers could be seen roaming the baselines of the basketball court, rallying the crowd, dancing, fist-bumping, and posing for pictures with a handful of lucky students.

Kamran Zafar, a junior, says he was excited to see the Falcon again. “Oh my God I was so happy! Having him there increases the energy so much. He was the reason I was yelling so much.” Kamran even took a selfie with the mascot.

“Our Falcon is the root of our school spirit,” SGA Vice President Pat Adams said.

That spirit is infectious. After the pep rally, Ms. Nelson reported a number of students asking if they could wear the Falcon outfit to future events. She said there may have to be auditions to determine who can wear the school spirit the best.

Meanwhile, in the hopes of this recovery being the last, Ms. Huckbody’s office is the newfound nest of the Falcon outfit. Ms. Nelson said, “We just hope not to lose it again.”
