Band Keeps Marching Past Foes

Updated: Jan 8

The regiment made finals at the Capital City Band Expo for the first time in 13 years, breaking the long running curse of not making it to the finals. Drum major Layla Vaughn was very excited to share her perspective of the moment.  “I’ve lived through the past three years at Sanderson hoping and hoping we’d make finals and it was really rough last year because we got ninth (top 8 make finals) by 0.01 of a point.” With many achievements and breaking the long running curse, the Jordan Regiment had an exciting season!

They placed second in general effect, first in percussion, music performance, visual performance, and first in their class, which led to them placing fourth overall in the finals. “It was a crazy dream come true. I could hear two of the past drum majors, Katie and Kailynn, screaming and I was like wow these past couple years have culminated to this moment and I'm so so so happy that I got to be a part of it,” Layla continued.

The regiment is set to perform in the Durham Holiday Parade on Saturday, December 13th, which will be their last event of the season. In addition to the marching regiment, the concert and jazz ensembles are preparing for their winter concert on Thursday, December 18th at 6:30. The wind ensemble will be playing the holiday classic, Sleigh Ride, and this year Mr. Dittmar will be conducting this piece.

In even more exciting news, a Grammy Award winning bassoonist will be playing with the wind ensemble to help raise money for Jordan to acquire a new bassoon. Dr. Ryan Reynolds, the assistant professor of bassoon at UNCG, is a member of the Akropolis Reed Quintet, which has released six studio albums, with the most recent winning a 2025 Grammy award. Bassons are very expensive, with the average cost ranging from $5,000-$20,000, so come out and support the bands!
